Self-Regulation and Social Skills Courses

We offer two different courses, Superflex and Zones of Regulation, aimed at teaching children how to regulate their emotions and behave in social situations.

These courses use a flexible lesson structure with open-enrollment, meaning you can join at any time.

Miss a class? No problem! Classes are non-cumulative (meaning each week does not rely on being there the weeks before), and classes run in a repeating cycle.

For example, if you miss the Superflex lesson on Rock-Brain, no worries! Just check the calendar to see when Rock-Brain is running next, and sign up for that class online!

Superflex

The Superflex program uses a superhero theme to teach kids about social and emotional concepts such as flexible thinking, how to be part of a group, and social awareness. The program introduces a cast of characters, including the hero Superflex and his enemies, the Unthinkables. Each Unthinkable represents a different social or emotional challenge, such as impulsivity, distraction, or anxiety. Children learn how to use their own “Superflexible” thinking to defeat the Unthinkables and improve their social and emotional skills. The program includes a variety of activities, games, and visual aids to engage children and reinforce the concepts they learn.

Each week, children will learn about a different Unthinkable, and how they can use their Superflex strategies to defeat them! If they complete the lesson, and the homework, they will earn a badge for that Unthinkable. Children will work to earn a badge for each Unthinkable over the 15 lessons, and once they have all 15 they will earn their Superflex Badge!

Zones of Regulation

The Zones of Regulation program teaches children and young adults how to identify and understand their emotions and behaviour, and provides them with a range of tools and strategies to regulate their emotions and behaviour effectively. These strategies may include deep breathing, movement activities, sensory tools, problem-solving, and self-reflection.

Each Zone represents being at a different level of energy, and the emotions and behaviour that go with it.

Each week, children will learn about each Zone (Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue), and how to get into and out of each Zone.

Children will work to earn badges by completing classes and homework, with badges for each Zone.

Study Skills Classes

This program is designed to help individuals learn not for memorization, but for long-term knowledge building. In these classes you will work with an instructor to build an evidence-based study plan, and learn the science behind long-term learning strategies. Classes are run in 6 week sessions, and attendance for each session is recommended as lessons will build on the prior week’s material.

  • For high school students, the class is Tuesday from 7:00-8:00pm
  • For college/university students, the class is held virtually, Wednesday from 7:00-8:00pm
